New Allilgators Arrive at Georgia Aquarium!

Published Jan 17, 2008

The American alligator comes to the Georgia Aquarium as part of our newest exhibit in the River Scout gallery. Come see this ancient species today! Scientists say that alligators have been roaming the earth for more than 150 years.

Despite its longevity through history, the American alligator was almost lost. It was listed as an endangered species in 1967 because of habitat loss and market hunting. The American alligator was declared fully recovered in 1987, but trade in alligator skins and products is still regulated by the Fish and Wildlife Service.

This animal is the largest reptile in North America. It can grow to be 15 feet long and up to 1,000 pounds! Come take a new look at these amazing animals and learn how our actions can affect their habitat.

The American alligator is just one of several animals to join our Georgia Aquarium family lately. Be sure to check out the leopard whiprays and bowmouth guitarfish during your visit!
