The creative art of scrapbooking has grown into a craft phenomenon that has become more than just creating expressive memory albums. Today’s crafters create scrap art of all varieties from home decor to paper crafts such as cards and announcements to purses, jewelry, and decoupage boxes – and the audience for scrap art and paper craft projects encompasses people of all ages from all walks of life.
La Tonya Thompson, who together with Laetitia Russ and Kelly Standridge owns Scrap Chic Boutique in Decatur, echoes the sentiment of paper crafting appealing to all ages. “Scrapbooking in general is becoming more paper crafting. It is more a mainstream hobby”, says Thompson. A special education teacher, Thompson loves scrap booking with children because it allows them to express themselves through a creative medium. She says “No one cares if something is crooked because it can look to be meant that way.”
Scrap Chic Boutique is a scrapbooking store that offers paper finds and endless supplies for scrap art. They carry many products that would be difficult, if not impossible, to find at a general art store, including the brands that are in the national scrapbooking magazines. They also offer a variety of classes along with five clubs exclusive to Scrap Chic: Stamp club, Recipe Club, Dye cut club, a kids class, and Memory Art sessions that include dinner for just $15.00.
Beautifully decorated, Scrap Chic Boutique aims to inspire creativity in paper crafts with a gallery of past work and meticulously organized sections for every occasion from scouting to weddings. The three owners, who started the business out of a genuine passion for scrapbooking, strive to get to know their customers personally to offer the best services they can.
Serving the metro Atlanta area, Scrap Chic Boutique is located at 906 W. College in Decatur. The hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sundays from 1:00 to 6:00. They will be celebrating their one-year anniversary on February 22 with special hours from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm, with demonstrations from a large vendor, make and takes, and giveaways planned. Whether you’re a novice looking to get started in scrap art or a veteran paper crafter, don’t miss this event.
