Gado Gado is an Indonesian term that, according to owners Jill and Setiawan Onggo, “is loosely used in everyday Indonesian to connote mixture of different things.” At Gado Gado Home Imports, you’ll find just that in their fantastic and eclectic mixture of art, furniture, jewelry and handmade crafts imported directly from Indonesian.
In 1997, Jill and Setiawan decided to relocate from Indonesia, where they met and married, back to the States; however, instead of moving back to Jill’s hometown of Buffalo, they decided to establish their store in Atlanta to enjoy “the warmth of this growing city.” The couple is celebrating the ten-year anniversary of their original store located on Amsterdam Avenue and the one-year anniversary of their Decatur store located on West Ponce de Leon. Both stores offer unique Indonesian art, furniture and accessories at affordable prices.
Unlike other import stores that order their furnishings from a catalog, Jill and Setiawan personally walk the streets of Indonesia to find the most rare and beautiful crafts, jewelry and furnishings. Their personal involvement in purchasing the store’s wares doesn’t end when they return from Indonesia. When you visit their store, you are likely to see either Jill or Setiawan at the register, stocking merchandise, or helping customers choose the perfect furniture for their home.
The furniture at Gado Gado Home Imports is also environmentally conscious as many pieces are crafted from old homes and buildings. Old furniture is also recycled into vibrant new pieces. The reuse of old wood gives each piece of furniture an exceptional texture and character that you won’t find in another furniture store.
You can preview Gado Gado’s unique art and furniture on their website at www.gadogado.com. Their first store is located at 549-4 Amsterdam Avenue in Atlanta. They are open Monday and Wednesday from 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. and Saturday through Sunday from 12:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. The new store in Decatur is located at 431-1 West Ponce De Leon and is open Monday through Friday from 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. and Sunday from 12:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.
