At Little Shop of Stories, a family-friendly bookstore in Decatur, books come alive for children of all ages through book groups, storytime and other events hosted by the shop’s owners, Diane Capriola and Dave Shallenberger. This eclectic duo began their careers as a school psychologist and attorney, respectively, before deciding to translate their love of children and books into the fantastic wonderland they named Little Shop of Stories.
Little Shop of Stories puts their love of books to good use everyday through the various events hosted by the store. Since Little Shop of Stories focuses primarily on children’s books, the majority of their events and literature cater to kids and young adults. Little Shop of Stories makes Story Time an event three times a week as they invite kids to come in their favorite pajamas to listen to a story while snacking on milk and cookies. If you think Story Time is fun, then you should try one of Little Shop of Stories hosted birthday parties, which include Story Time, food, and paper goods for all the kids. Jake’s Ice Cream, located inside the store, provides ice cream for birthday parties or anytime.
For both children and adults, Little Shop of Stories also offers book groups. On January 16th, Kids and Companions will meet to discuss The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson. On January 17th, the “Guys Who Read” group will discuss Phillip Pullman’s The Golden Compass.
Don’t miss the book signings this week by two celebrated and award winning authors. Come by Little Shop of Stories to meet John Scieszka, the Caldecott winning author of The Stinky Cheese Man on January 15th at 4:00 P.M. and Eric Rohmann, the Caldecott winning author of Clara and Asha on January 18th at 4:00 P.M.
