Gorilla Haven Announces Facility Tours

Published Jul 11, 2008

Secluded in the mountains of Fannin County, Georgia, Gorilla Haven is the only private gorilla holding facility in the world certified by The American Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). This unique and ambitious project is the brainchild and passion of Jane and Steuart Dewar, who have devoted all of their time, energy and personal fortune to the research, building and continuation of this sanctuary. The Dewars recently announced the availability of seven dates for walking tours of Gorilla Haven between July and October 2008.

Gorilla Haven is operated by the Dewar Wildlife Trust, Inc. (DWT). Jane Dewar, President of the DWT and Founder of Gorilla Haven said the tours are a rare opportunity for people to see the inner workings of the facility, which is not opened to the public. “The walking tours will accommodate groups up to 25,” she said, “and will include behind-the-scenes looks at the intricate structural setup of safety checks and of the massive efforts that have gone into ensuring the health and well being of the animals housed here. It’s all about the gorillas around here,” she added.

At present there are two gorillas in residence. Silverbacks Joe and Oliver each has his own habitat and his own keeper. Joe, at 45 years old, is one of the oldest gorillas in captivity. Oliver, almost 20, is the only know silverback gorilla who is totally deaf. Gorilla Haven gives them as enriched and natural lives as possible. Visits to both animals are included in the walking tours.

C.E. Steuart Dewar, CEO of DWT, emphasized that they receive no revenue from the government, zoos or grants. Until now, everything has been funded by the couple themselves. However, the economic downturn has affected Gorilla Haven just like the rest of society and the 2008 tours are planned as fund-raising events. Donations of $25 to $50 per person are being requested to join a tour.

Tour Dates:

  • Saturday July 12 - 10 am to noon
  • Wednesday August 13 - 10 am to noon
  • Saturday September 13 - noon to 2 pm
  • Wednesday October 8 - noon to 2 pm

The Dewar Wildlife Trust, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) non-profit Georgia corporation, is constructing and operating Gorilla Haven and engages in conservation efforts in Africa and around the globe.
