Agnes Scott College Presents Bella Musica: A Concert of Women Composers

Published Apr 1, 2008

An eclectic concert of music, including the premier of one piece, by women composers through past centuries is being presented by Agnes Scott’s Department of Music in collaboration with the Georgia State Committee of the National Museum of women in the Arts. With a focus on contemporary women composers, the concert is in honor of Ruth McDonald, professor emerita of music at Georgia State University, from which she retired after 24 years of teaching. McDonald received an artist’s diploma in performance from the Juilliard School of Music, and her New York Town Hall debut was in 1949. She received the attention of the press for her versatility—combining performances as a concert pianist with a taxing career as a jazz pianist in Greenwich Village. With a career focused on women in music, one of McDonald’s more outstanding contributions at Georgia State was her Women in Music course offered each spring.
