Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Hosts Special Day for Kids with Cancer
This Friday, metro Atlanta’s caregiving company, AmeriCare (www.americarealliance.com) will be spending a very special day volunteering at the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston’s “Queen for a Day®” event. The annual program for girls and boys battling cancer or a blood disorder is designed to raise self-esteem and self-confidence at a time when they may need it the most.
“If, for one day, we can make every girl feel like royalty and every boy feel like a hero, why would we ever want to miss out on that special day?” asked Doug Lueder, owner of AmeriCare of Metro Atlanta. “For us to be here is just an extension of who we are as a company. We’re committed to being there when families are in need for care. We typically provide caregiving services in the home, but today, this kind of care is what’s important.”
AmeriCare and other volunteers will offer children personal make-up/face-painting sessions, hands-on cookie decorating time, arts and crafts, and fire engine tours. Newly-crowned Mrs. Georgia Tiffany Hudak will be on hand to offer helpful tips the proper wave, the royal walk and how best to wear their tiaras. The DeKalb County firefighters will join the program to help boys discover the keys to bravery and courage and to find their inner hero. The firefighters will be offering fireman hats, badges, and tours of their fire engines.
Queen for a Day is a non profit organization developed to raise the self-esteem and self-confidence of girls and boys with cancer. It helps seriously and terminally ill pediatric patients fight the psychological war of illness. The special program hosts tea parties for girls to be pampered with makeovers, manicures, and their very own coronation ceremony. Each girl receives a real tiara donated by beauty queens across the nation. Boys are offered their very own “Heroes” program which is grounded in the natural connection they usually have with police officers and firefighters. This program seeks to instill the qualities of bravery and courage in boys by exposing them to real life heroes.
The Aflac Cancer Center is committed to providing its pediatric patients a brighter future through advanced medical treatment, family-centered care, a child-friendly environment and innovative research. It is recognized as one of the top five childhood cancer centers in the country by Child magazine. Its multi-disciplinary teams treat nearly 350 new cancer patients each year and follow more than 2,500 patients with sickle cell disease, hemophilia and other blood disorders. Their courageous patients range from infants to young adults
