DeKalb To Receive Award During ACCG Conference

DECATUR- DeKalb County will be honored with the Georgia County Excellence Award during the Association County Commissioners of Georgia’s (ACCG) annual awards breakfast on Tuesday, April 29, 2008, for the Seminole Landfill Renewable Green Energy Project. The conference will be held at 8:30 a.m., at the Savannah Civic Center, 301 W. Oglethorpe Ave., in Savannah GA.

“It is fitting with the recent celebration of Earth Day that we are being recognized for a project that is environmentally friendly,” said Chief Executive Officer Vernon Jones. “I am truly proud to be honored amongst my peers at this year’s ACCG conference.”

DeKalb County’s Renewable Green Energy Project was featured in the March 2008 edition of Georgia Trend Magazine. The project has also been recognized as the SWANA Georgia Chapter 2007 Innovation of the Year and EPA LMOP 2006 Partner of the Year.

The Seminole Landfill Green Energy Facility officially opened in December 2006. To date, DeKalb County has produced and sold to Georgia Power 33,500 Mega Watt Hours of Electricity. Georgia Power has paid more than $1.6 million to DeKalb County for green electricity.
