Watershed Management Gives Homeowners Free Opportunity To Conserve More Water

Published Nov 7, 2007

DECATURSince August 2007, the DeKalb Watershed Management Department has given out approximately 600 conservation kits to homeowners, whose homes were built before 1992, as an incentive to save water and dollars. DeKalb Watershed Management is continuing its educational efforts to encourage citizens to limit water use by offering complimentary water conservation kits through www.dekalbwatershed.com.

Once requested, kits will be mailed to those DeKalb residents whose homes meet the aforementioned requirement. Only one kit per household will be honored.  “DeKalb County began looking at conservation methods before we reached the Level 4 drought restrictions that were mandated by the state of Georgia,” says Chief Executive Officer Vernon Jones. “We must all continue to be proactive by looking at various opportunities to save water where we can. Water conservation kits are our way of providing DeKalb homeowners with an incentive to save money and also conserve water that will benefit our environment and state.”

Each “watersmart kit” contains 1 low flow showerhead, 2 faucet aerators, 1 flow meter bag, and toilet leak detection tablets. The kits focus on three main components: determining individual water usage, detecting leaks and checking and changing water fixtures. They are designed to save homeowners money and create awareness about how much water is actually being used in homes throughout the county.
