Letter to Editor: Make Christmas Memorable for Military Families

Published Nov 14, 2007

Dear HometownDeKalb.com:

We would like ask for assistance in making this a memorable Christmas for military families having a difficult time due to having their sole provider being away serving their present assignments.

Many of these families have financial difficulties due to the lower income they are presented with and the relocation moves which created a change of life style. They all have various situations but they all have one thing in common all have small children and lack funds to get them gifts.

I would like to insure they at least can bring some joy to their children and am seeking parties willing to act as sponsoring angels.

I am a veteran myself. I'm 65 years of age, now retired, and believe me, I've had my own difficulties due to hurricanes. I've managed to get on but my life is fine compared to many of these deserving families.

I run a website totally at my cost (www.adusa.com/FamNeeds.htm) to help these families now numbering 187 as of this date. I receive no grants, funds in order to accomplish this. I post their needs and try to match them with sponsors to help them as best it can be done on a one to one basis.

Please if you will let your staff, employees and public know of this effort.  Have them check the families I have listed and I'll put them in direct contact with them so they can help with Christmas toys or whatever they can. It would be much appreciated.

I want you to know that though I run the site -- 100% of anything received goes directly to the families in need. Since the actions in Iraq and Afghanistan started, I noted a growing need from military families and decided on my own to try and help.

I know I can't do it alone. So would it be possible for you to let others know, so we can at least assure the children have a good Christmas?  Thank you in advance.

The site for the needs is www.adusa.com/FamNeeds.htm

Respectfully,

Roger J. Mealey Jr.
