Agnes Scott College Athletics Director Joeleen Akin announced that Tony Ciccone has been appointed head basketball coach at this liberal arts and sciences college for women.
“We are excited about the addition of Tony Ciccone to our staff," Akin said. "Tony has been very successful over the past four years heading up the recruiting and the resurgence of Emory Women's Basketball. He will bring new ideas and insights in recruiting.”
Ciccone, a 1996 University of Florida graduate, comes to Agnes Scott after four seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Emory Eagles. During his tenure, Ciccone helped rebuild the Eagles’ program, which this past season led the University Athletic Association in scoring, three-point field goal percentage and steals.
Emory recorded winning campaigns in two of Ciccone’s last three seasons. In 2007-2008, Emory concluded the year with an overall slate of 14-11, which included a 7-7 mark in University Athletic Association contests – the best record for the Eagles in league action since 1998-1999. In addition, Ciccone helped Emory to victories over a total of eight top 25-ranked programs including three during 2007-08. He also coached a total of five players to All-University Athletic Association first or second-team berths.
“I am thankful for the opportunity to lead the Agnes Scott College basketball program,” Ciccone said. “It is a privilege to be a part of the Scottie family and I am excited to lead the program into the future.”
Prior to arriving at Emory, Ciccone spent one year (2003-2004) at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. as the assistant women's basketball coach and recruiting coordinator. Ciccone helped the Ducks secure an Eastern College Athletic Conference post-season tournament bid during that season. He also played a major role in recruiting one of the most successful classes in school history.
Ciccone also coached five seasons at the high school level. In Florida, he was the head girls’ coach at his alma mater, Miami Beach Senior High School, a boys’ and girls’ junior varsity head coach at Barbara Goleman Senior High School in Hialeah and an assistant girls coach at Santa Fe High School. In Minnesota he served as freshman head coach at Roseville Senior High School.
A native of Miami Beach, Fla., Ciccone earned his master’s degree in sports administration in 2007 from Georgia State University. He received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Florida in 1996. He played one year of college basketball and baseball at North Park University in Illinois before completing his studies at Florida, where he was tapped as a member of Florida Blue Key Leadership Honorary.
Agnes Scott, a member of the Great South Athletic Conference, compiled an overall record of 17-9 including a conference mark of 9-3 in 2007-08.
